Diverging Together
COACH, SPEAKER
Katrina Disbrowe-Wong
Hi there! My name is Katrina, most people call me Kat. I live and work in London, Ontario. I am a neurodivergent (ND) Mama, in a blended family with my husband and our 4 children.
I have a career history in the finance and insurance industry. More recently, I have become trained and certified in life coaching, public speaking, and am a certified emotional health counsellor. My passion is educating people about the experiences of Autistic and ND folks. I love nurturing acceptance and helping others to create an environment where ND folks can thrive as their authentic selves.
Parenting an Autistic kiddo with ADHD, I found myself at odds with much of the information I was presented by the medical and mental-health practitioner community, when it came to advice on how to parent and support my ND child. When our home environment became more tense, and mental health was quickly deteriorating, I turned to communities of autistic adults who generously shared their experiences and anecdotes.
It became clear that there was a great divide between the actual neurodivergent folks’ experiences, and the ways in which the carers of ND folks were being taught about their experiences by non-ND practitioners. The ableist barriers to accessing ND-affirming resources was a problem.
We changed our home to be ND affirming, and to accommodate demand avoidance we became experts in low-demand living. We went from a frustrated and hopeless space, to a space of radical acceptance and peace.
There were many hurdles, missteps, and tough lessons along the way. I hope to help others on this same journey to get to that peaceful space a little faster and more easily than when I was navigating this alone.
Please reach out if you see yourself in any of this. You belong here!
GUEST SPEAKER
Dexter
Hi! I’m Dex. I am a teenager - however, I don’t really like sharing many photos of myself. This is me when I was a baby!
I am neurodivergent and was diagnosed Autistic just before going to high-school. My biggest interest is in all things sports and athleticism. I play several different sports and am very competitive!
I have been through a lot in my life, and mental health is a really important topic to me. I like to share my story and experiences with people, and I hope that it helps others to feel less alone. I would like to help families of neurodivergent kids to understand what the kids might be experiencing, and how to support them.
I am available for some small-group speaking events where I can share my experiences and answer questions as a later-diagnosed Autistic kid. I particularly focus on helping people understand the ND experience of pathological demand avoidance.
